KUSI MORNING PEP RALLY ON FRIDAY

hey Eagles? Do you want to show off your school spirit on live TV? Be sure to come out at 5:45 AM at the Gym this Friday! The class with the most attending our pep rally will earn 10 SPIRIT POINTS, so you don’t want to miss out! Those attending will also be provided with free breakfast!

CANINE AMBASSADORS TO VISIT OLYMPIAN

The Humane Society’s Canine Ambassadors are coming to Olympian during ATP and lunch on October 17th and only during ATP during Nov. 6th and Dec 4th. You must have a parent or guardian sign a waiver form, available in rooms 609, 401, and in the counseling center. Return the form to the box in the counseling center. Students will be given a pass with their timeslot. If you don’t make it into the first visit, don’t worry. We will have more visits in the future. Come enjoy the company of some very special furry friends.

KIDS 12 AND UNDER GET IN MUSEUM FREE IN OCTOBER

This October 1-31, kids 12 and under receive free admission at more than 40 art, cultural, and science museums and historical sites in San Diego County when they present the Kids Free in October coupon

ONE BOOK FOR TEENS

One Book for Teens is a companion program to One Book, One San Diego, that is just for tweens and teens. Every year, the community is asked to nominate titles the entire community should read together – for adults, teens and kids. The One Book 2019 selection is The Crossover by Kwame Alexander, a Newbery Medal winner. Visit the One Book One San Diego for Teens page for more information.

Scholarship and Award Opportunities, Essay Contests for Students
Coca-Cola Scholars Program: The Coca-Cola Scholars Program scholarship is an achievement-based $20,000 scholarship awarded to 150 qualifying high school seniors who will pursue a degree at a post-secondary institution in the U.S. Students are recognized for their capacity to lead and serve, as well as their commitment to making a significant impact on their schools and communities. The application deadline is Oct. 31. Visit the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation page to apply.
BBB Ambassador Scholarship: Through the Better Business Bureau’s (BBB) Ambassador Scholarship program, students can win scholarships between $1,000 and $2,500 for delivering presentations to their peers with tips and resources for navigating topics such as credit, rentals, loans, and employment scams as they near college and beyond. Each ambassador or team needs to deliver a minimum of three presentations to groups of any size organized through school or other extracurriculars. The application deadline is Oct. 31. Prudential Spirit of Community Awards: The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program is searching for top youth volunteers in grades 5 through 12 in the areas of serving those in need, promoting health and safety, protecting the environment, and more. The awards program, sponsored by Prudential Financial and the National Association of Secondary School Principals, is the largest youth-recognition program in the country and is based exclusively on volunteer community service. The nomination process begins at the school level, and candidates can advance to state- and national-level judging. Two California winners will receive a $1,000 scholarship, a medallion, and a trip to Washington, D.C. Additional awards will be given at the national level. Student applications are due Nov. 5, and certifications by the applicant’s school are due Nov. 15. Visit the Prudential awards website for complete information.
Flying Leathernecks Essay Contest: The University of San Diego’s Character Development Center and the Flying Leatherneck Historical Foundation present their fifth annual Fall Essay Contest. This year’s theme, Who is Your Hero?, asks students in grades 6 to 12 to reflect on the core values of the U.S. Marine Corps and our society by exploring what the virtues of honor, courage, and commitment mean in their own lives. Cash prizes are awarded to first through third place winners, and teachers of winning students receive a cash award as well.   The deadline for submissions is Nov. 11. KidsWrite! SD: A Unique Children’s Writing Contest Students from 6 to 18 years of age can participate in a creative writing contest centered on the theme of freedom and sponsored by the San Diego Writers Festival in partnership with The San Diego Union-Tribune. The submission categories are poetry, reflective essay, short story, and graphic novella. There is a Special Writers division for writers with special needs. There will be cash prizes for winners in each category and the top entries may be published in The San Diego Union-Tribune. The submission deadline is Jan. 2.
